Julya “Julye” Carwile Harris, wife of the late Walter Raymond Harris Jr., died peacefully at home on June 4, 2020. She was born July 6, 1925 in the Level Land Community to the late Nelle Elizabeth Temple Carwile and the late William Julian Carwile. She graduated from Greenville High School and attended Draughon Business School located in Greenville. She was an accomplished model with the Patricia Stevens Agency of Washington DC, having graduated from the modeling and finishing school of Southeastern University.
Julye and Walter were married on November 29, 1946 at the Bible Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, William Julian “Jule” Carwile, brother Frank Douglas Carwile, and sister Anna Walker Pierce.
Julye and Walter retired in 1982 to Abbeville South Carolina, after spending 28 years in the Air Force, residing in locations all over the world. Julye served 19 years as an Abbeville Commissioner on the old 96 tourism commission, she was an active member of the Piedmont Tech Visitors Board. She was a charter member of the Abbeville Area Medical Centers Medical Board. Beginning in 1983, she began volunteering with the Abbeville County Spring Festival. She continued to chair the Festival for 13 years. In 1986, she became the first female president of the Abbeville County Chamber of Commerce and held that position for 5 years. In the same year, she was voted Abbeville County Woman of the Year by the Pilot Club. In 1994, she was placed in the Abbeville County Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Literary Lantern Book Club, Wild Flower Garden Club, Daffodil Garden Club, and Kitchen Cabinet Club.
She is survived by her four children, Lynna Harris of Greenwood, SC, Jeffrey Neal (Amy) Harris of Huntersville NC, Brian Raymond (Cindy) Harris of Bossier City, LA and Allyson Harris (Brian) McKittrick of Hodges, SC.
She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, Rachael Calia, Alexa Harris, Jeffrey (Laurie) Harris, Ryan (Mackenzie) Harris, Colin (Jessica) Harris, Abigail Harris, Jacob Harris, Charles Edward Harris, Joseph (Amanda) Prudhomme, Grant Harris and Chandler Perry Smith and 13 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Julye’s Life will be 2:00PM, Saturday, June 27, 2020 in the Harris Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Loftis officiating. Julye will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband at a later date.
