William 'Bill' Stone

William Curtis ‘Bill’ Stone, 89, of Abbeville, husband of Joannah Crittendon Stone, died Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the Abbeville Nursing Home.  He was born in Abbeville February 27,1934 to the late James Elbert and Eva Strawhorn Stone.   

Bill was a dedicated public servant and former Abbeville County Sheriff who honorably served his country in the United States Army, 101^st Airborne Division.  He was a Master Mason, York Rite Mason and a Shriner.  Bill had a long career in law enforcement.  In 1985, he became the Abbeville County Sheriff, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1989.  Following retirement, Bill enjoyed his love of old cars, fishing and carpentry work.  He was one of the original members of the ‘Wheels of Time’ car club and a member of Little Mountain Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded death by his first wife, Sybaline Simpson Stone; an infant son, James Robert Stone; five brothers, James ‘Otis’ Stone, Howard ‘Buddy’ Stone, Marion Stone, Lowry Stone and George Stone; five sisters, Inez Stone Thomas, Margaret Betty Stone Boyd, Joann Stone Nabors, Louise Stone Farmer and Doris Stone Hodges.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joannah, of the home; seven children, Charles (Ira Dean) Stone, Donnie (Joann) Stone, Glen (Wanda) Stone, Brenda Barnes, Anna (Kevin) Benson, Mark (Linda) Crittendon and Amy Crittendon; thirteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00PM, Saturday, February 10, 2024, in Little Mountain Presbyterian Church with Rev. Darrell Fetzer officiating.   Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends following the graveside.
