Gerald Thomas Sumeral, 71, of Laurens, SC, died peacefully, Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the Hospice House in Greenwood, SC. He was born in Laurens, SC to the late Edgbert Perrin Sumeral and Janie Lee-Ida Dobbins Sumeral.

Affectionately known as ‘Tommy’ or ‘Buttermilk’, he graduated from Ford High School, Class of 1971. Tommy had a successful career as a water waste refinement manager with Cermactec, retiring after 28 years of dedicated service.

Beyond his career, he was widely recognized for his exceptional talent as a musician. Tommy was known as one of the best bass guitar players in the country. Throughout his musical career, he had the privilege of recording music with legendary artists such as Reba McIntyre, Hank Williams, Jr., Colt Ford and George Strait. Tommy was widely known in the Laurens and Greenwood areas, playing with various local bands including Mike Callaham & The Rough Riders, White Buffalo Band, Alibi Band, High Country Band and the Radio Band, contributing to a legacy that will echo through the hearts of many.

He was passionate about all things Harley Davidson and his enthusiasm for the USC Gamecocks was unmatched. In his downtime, Tommy found peace and joy in fishing, a hobby that brought him much relaxation. He was of the Church of God faith.

Tommy is survived by his two children, Shanna Sumeral (Stetson) of Calhoun Falls, SC and Ashley S. King (Danny) of Donalds, SC; brother, Barry Sumeral of Laurens, SC; five grandchildren; numerous extended family and friends; and his fur baby kitty ‘Blue’.

A celebration of Tommy’s life will be held at a later date.
