Stephen J. Mountford

Stephen ‘Steve’ Jay Mountford, 83, of Abbeville, SC, husband of Dolores ‘Dee’ Mountford, died peacefully May 21, 2024, after a long illness with cancer.  He was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Joseph and Agnes Mountford.  

Steve grew up in Guilford, Connecticut until he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Ord in California.  After an honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to his career with Flexible Tubing (later Flexible Technologies) in Connecticut. Upon his return, he was chosen to be a part of small team to assist in the start-up of a new manufacturing facility in Abbeville, SC.  Steve, along with his wife and young family moved across the country to begin their new lives in Abbeville, SC where he became a fundamental member of the community.  He worked for Flexible Technologies for 46 years until he retired.

Steve was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abbeville, SC and later Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greenwood, SC.  He was a proud supporter of his children’s activities and volunteered for many years with the   Abbeville Dixie Youth Baseball League as a coach and the Abbeville High School Band in whatever capacity needed. Steve was also a member of the American Legion Post 2 of Abbeville, the Greenwood Corvette Club, and the Central State Senior Men’s Golf league.  He was an avid golfer, baseball enthusiast and loved supporting his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their various sporting events and activities.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie and two sisters, Joan Shapiro and Patricia Kruse.

Steve is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dee; three children, Susan (Ray) Hilley of Abbeville, Stefanie (Jason) Bowen of Greenwood and Robbie (Jenny) Mountford of Abbeville; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A rosary prayer service will be held 5:00PM, Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Harris Funeral Home, 302 N. Main Street, Abbeville, SC.   Visitation will follow from 6:00PM – 8:00PM 

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held 11:00AM, Friday, May 24, 2024, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 915 Mathis Road, Greenwood, SC.  The family will receive friends and family in St. Bernadette Hall immediately following the service.

A private burial will be held at Ramsey Creek at a later date.
