Robert Wayne Spires

Robert Wayne Spires, 74, of Abbeville, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the Abbeville Area Medical Center. He was born to the late Ray C. ‘Big Pop’ Spires and Doris Lucile Crittendon Spires. Robert was a lifelong resident of Abbeville.

Robert attended Calhoun Falls High School and honorably served in the South Carolina National Guard. In the early 1970s, he and his father founded Single State Concrete. He later became the owner of Spires Construction, retiring in 1995. Robert was a talented piano player in his younger years and enjoyed playing along side his brother Danny who played the saxophone. Known for his famous storytelling, working hard and farming. Robert adored his granddaughter Mallory and will be missed by many.

He is survived by his children, Crystal Spires Wiley and her husband Darris, Steven Spires and Michelle McMurtury; a brother Danny Ray Spires and his wife Vicki; a beloved granddaughter, Mallory Wiley ‘Mal-Mal’ and her friend Conner Sanders; a nephew, Shane Spires and his wife Amy and their children, Shaney Young and her husband Brant, Clary Spires and Danni Spires; a special friend, Ruby Johnson and a host of extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 31, 2026 from 1:00PM to 2:00PM at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin on Monday in the funeral home chapel at 2:30PM with Rev. Scotty Willoughby and Mr. Billy Stoll officiating. Burial will follow in the Spires Family Cemetery on Hwy 71, Abbeville.

Memorial contributions, in memory of Robert, may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
