Richard G. Balogh

Richard George ‘Dick’ Balogh, 92, of McCormick, SC, Savannah Lakes Village, husband of the late Helen M. Balogh, died Thursday, September 18, 2025, at his residence.

Dick was born in Cleveland, OH, to the late John V. and Helen Petro Balogh. When he was six years old, his family moved to Detroit, MI. Dick was a 1951 graduate of St. Stanislaus High School in Detroit, where he was affectionately known as “Tex” for his singing of old country western songs. He was a star athlete in football, basketball, and golf, earning him the nickname, Golf Giant. Dick furthered his education at the University of Detroit before earning an associate’s degree from Lawrence Institute. He honorably served his country in the United States Army. Dick was a dedicated professional who spent an impressive 32 years with the Chrysler Corporation, as well as 17 years at Kelsey Hayes Automotive.

On May 18, 1957, he married the love of his life, the late Helen M. Balogh, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. Together, they created a loving home and raised ten children: seven boys and three girls. Dick was active in the family parish, St. Christopher in Detroit, serving as lector, basketball coach, and a member of the Dad’s Club. He also participated in multiple golf leagues, acting as league secretary and treasurer. In 1965, committed to their faith, Dick and Helen became professed Secular Franciscan Tertiaries at St. Bonaventure Capuchin Seminary and Church in Detroit, MI.

Following retirement, Dick and Helen relocated to the Savannah Lakes Village in McCormick, SC, where he became a cherished parishioner of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Dick faithfully contributed to the spiritual life of the congregation, serving as a lector, a member of the Prayer and Worship Committee, Bible Study Group, Right to Life Prayer Team, and the Men’s Club. Dick was also a dedicated member of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Fraternity Secular Franciscan Order in Augusta, GA.

Dick’s life was one characterized by service to his family, his faith, and his community. He prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet daily, fully embracing God’s love and mercy for all. He will be fondly remembered by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Balogh; brothers, Doug Balogh, Jim Balogh, and Michael Goins; a sister, Gerry Turner; and a daughter-in-law, Lori Balogh.
