Rev. Wendell Rhodes

Rev. Wendell Rhodes, 80, of Abbeville, husband of Beverly Thompson Rhodes, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.  Born in Williamston, he was the son of the late Broadus Washington and Willie Mae Allen Rhodes.

 

Rev. Rhodes graduated from Palmetto High School in 1961 and continued his education at North Greenville College, Furman University and Erskine College Seminary, where he earned his masters in Theological Studies.   Throughout his life, he devoted himself to spreading the word of God, touching many hearts through his ministry.  Rev. Rhodes served many churches throughout his career – Retreat Baptist Church, Westminster; Hopewell Baptist, Anderson; Varennes Heights Baptist, Anderson; West Side Baptist, Spartanburg and Friendship Worship Center, Abbeville. He was the residing pastor of Carolina Community Church in Liberty.  Rev. Rhodes found joy in playing pickle ball and was an active member of the Gatewood tennis league, forming lasting friendships and creating cherished memories.   He was an enthusiastic Clemson Tiger fan and member of IPTAY.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Chase Shaw and a great granddaughter Makari Paul.

 

Rev. Rhodes is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Beverly; three daughters, Sandy Mickler of Simpsonville, Mischele Osborne (Steve) and Angie Smith (Clint), all of Abbeville; a brother, Kenneth Rhodes (Joyce) of Williamston; two sisters, Martha Childress and Carolyn Carroll, both of Anderson; fourteen grandchildren, Brandy (Ben), Skylyn, Joseph, Abby (Jared), Lauren (Austin), Andrew (Natalie), Dillon (Lauren), Austin (Savannah), Kyle, Noah (Erika), Zion, Landon, Jude and Maci; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

 

The family will receive friends 3:00PM to 5:00PM, Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Harris Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Friendship Worship Center, located at 223 Carwellyn Road, Abbeville, SC 29620 with Rev. Ronnie Cox, Rev. Rick Taylor, Rev. Dillon Holliday and Rev. Tony Temple officiating.  Burial will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 1201 Shady Grove Road, Belton, SC 29627.
