Patricia Helms McKee

Patricia Helen Helms McKee, 92, of Greenwood, SC, wife of Geroge R. McKee, died Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at her residence. She was born on March 21, 1931, in Orlando, FL, to the late Theron and Gladys Eady Helms.

She was a dedicated and compassionate individual who made a significant impact on the lives of those around her.

Patricia received her education at local schools in Orlando before graduating from high school. She furthered her skills by attending the Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, DC in 1950. Following her graduation, Patricia embarked on a successful career as a secretary, working in various secretarial roles, including at the National Democratic Club. Eventually, she found fulfillment working alongside a renowned Dermatologist.

Patricia met George McKee at the US Naval Academy, and they married in 1955. Their union resulted in two beautiful daughters: Pamela and Melida. As a military spouse, Patricia quickly adapted to Navy life and experienced the challenges of raising a family while George was away at sea. Throughout their marriage, Patricia and George embraced each new assignment with enthusiasm, relocating to numerous cities including Norfolk, VA; Annapolis, MD; Vallejo, CA; Idaho Falls ID; Mayport FL; Pearl Harbor HI; Wellington India; Washington DC; Memphis TN; San Diego CA; and Miami FL.

While primarily a devoted stay-at-home mother, Patricia also actively engaged with various local organizations wherever their travels took them. After George retired from the Navy, they resided in Alexandria, VA for 12 years. During this time, Patricia played an integral role in establishing the Military Women's Memorial located at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery—an enduring testament to her dedication to honoring servicewomen.

Following their time in Alexandria, Patricia and George settled in the Savannah Lakes Village near McCormick, SC. There she continued her advocacy work by co-founding Helping Hands United—a community assistance program. Patricia managed the food pantry for eight years and extended support to organizations such as the McCormick Children's Home, DAR, and local church projects. In January 2013, Patricia and George moved to Wesley Commons Continuing Care Community in Greenwood, SC, where Patricia helped establish a coloring group for fellow residents, fostering an environment of creativity and camaraderie. We mourn the loss of Patricia but also celebrate the life she lived—a life filled with love, compassion, and a commitment to making a positive impact on those around her. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire others for generations to come.

Patricia is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, George McKee; her devoted daughters, Pam J. Coan and husband Ed of Alexandria, VA, and Melida G. McKee of Roanoke, VA; and her cherished granddaughters, Bethany Coan and her husband Alex Kazanas, and Cierra Coan.
