Mary Alewine Byers, 72, of Ridgeville, SC, wife of Rev. Dr. Lloyd C. Byers, Jr., went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at her home. She was born in Abbeville, SC to the late Rev. James R. and Juanita Todd Alewine.

Mary was a 1971 graduate of Calhoun Falls High School. She continued her education at Anderson University, where she majored in music. Mary also sought to deepen her understanding of faith and service, earning a degree from New Orleans Baptist Seminary.

Her enjoyment for music led to a fulfilling career as a private music teacher. Known for her kindness and patience, she guided countless students inspiring a love for music that lasted well beyond their lessons.

Family stood at the center of Mary’s heart. She cherished every moment spent with her loved ones, finding joy in their gatherings and milestones. Her home was filled with music, warmth and the abiding presence of faith.

Mary was especially proud to share her faith in Jesus, which served as the cornerstone of her life. She shared her unwavering belief in Jesus with all she encountered. Her dedication to service reached a broad community through her leadership as Past President of the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. – an organization close to her heart and reflective of her commitment to supporting others during times of loss. Mary is a member of Lighthouse Community Church in St. George, SC.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, CPT Joshua T. Byers (USA).

Mary is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lloyd; two sons, Milam Lloyd Byers (Ashley) of Nashville, TN and Jared Ryan Byers of Ridgeville, SC; two brothers, Rev. Tommy Alewine (Joanne) and Jimmy Alewine (Robbie), all of Antreville, SC; and four beloved grandchildren, Gunnar, Remy, Ryder-John and Birdie Byers; and numerous extended family and friends.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 2:00PM, at Beulah Baptist Church, 2066 Hwy. 72, Abbeville, SC 29620.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions, in memory of Mary, be sent to Warfighter Wellness, www.darkhorseelite.org or to American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., www.americangoldstarmothers.org.

Those who knew Mary will remember her not only as a vital presence in their lives but as a precious mentor whose influence continues to resonate. Her legacy is one of generosity, love, and steadfast faith, embodying the values she held most dear.
