Julia Drennan Long

Julia Drennan Long, age 79, of McCormick, SC, wife of George Wallace Long, Jr., passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023, at Self Regional Healthcare.  She was born in Erwin, NC to the late Clifton Henderson Drennan and Blanche Quick Drennan.

Julia was a graduate of McCormick High School, class of 1962.  She then attended Columbia College where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1966.  Julia married George in the summer of 1966 immediately after graduating college and began her teaching career that fall.  She touched the hearts and minds of countless students throughout her distinguished 40+-year teaching career, most of which was spent teaching 2nd grade at Long Cane Academy.  Julia and George served as the hands and feet of Jesus- dedicated to visiting and helping those in their community.  Julia often took her elderly friends to doctor’s appointments and cooked and delivered food to those in need.  She was a long-time active member of McCormick First Baptist Church where she and George were greeters on Sunday mornings.  She was a member of the Koinonia Sunday School class and recently served on the church hostess committee.  In her earlier years, Julia helped with the church Acteens and youth groups, including chaperoning and cooking on summer youth trips.  She also worked with children as a leader at Awana, Vacation Bible school, and Good News Club.  She loved spending time with her devoted husband, children, grandchildren, family, and friends.  She always made visits special by cooking and baking her family’s “favorites”.

Julia is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, George, three children, three grandchildren, one sister, one brother, and numerous extended family and friends.  They include son George “Trey” Wallace Long, III (Jodi) of Gainesville, FL; son John Clifton Long (Karen) of McCormick, SC; daughter Julie Long Rucker (Douglas) of Gainesville, VA; grandson Samuel Wallace Long; granddaughter Alexandra Grace Long; grandson Shepard George Long; sister Teresa Drennan Thomas of Apopka, FL; and brother James Clifton Drennan (Ann Carol) of Durham, NC.

The beautiful legacy Julia leaves behind will forever be cherished in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have been a part of her life.  She lived her life to bring joy and show love to others.

A celebration of Julia’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at McCormick First Baptist Church.  Visitation will be held from 9:30–10:30 A.M. in the Maude Morgan Parlor.
