Johnny S. ‘Pappy’ Copeland, 68, of Abbeville, died Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at his home. He was born in Abbeville to Rosemary Hodges Copeland and the late James Eugene ‘Gene’ Copeland.
A 1975 graduate of Abbeville High School, Johnny continued his education by attending Presbyterian College. He was currently employed with Centerline Engineered Solutions (formerly KSC) in Greenwood. Johnny demonstrated dedication to his work and enjoyed building relationships with his colleagues.
He lived life to the fullest and had an infectious personality that captivated everyone around him. Johnny was known for sharing amusing stories that would bring laughter to any gathering. His storytelling was matched only by his vivacious personality, often engaging friends at Wings 101, where memories were spun around the restaurant.
A highlight of Johnny’s life was his deep-rooted passion for sports, especially through his role as a Dixie Youth coach for baseball and football. Throughout his life, he embraced a range of sporting activities, participating in various sports himself. Johnny was an avid golf and fishing enthusiast, finding joy on the greens of the McCormick Country Club, where he often played alongside his close-knit group of friends. These moments were marked by laughter, companionship and a love for the game.
His legacy is one of vibrant tales and the bonds of friendship that ensure his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Johnny was a member of Abbeville Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marcia Lynn Copeland.
Johnny is survived by his mother, Rosemary Copeland; son, John Rhett Copeland; daughter, Missy Copeland Williams (Bruce); four grandchildren, Seth Williams, Brice Williams, Alayna Copeland and EmmaKate Copeland; longtime companion and friend, Tammy Suttles; and numerous friends.
The family will receive friends 2:00PM – 3:00PM, Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 3:30PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Brandon Fulmer officiating. Burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery.
