Dr. James J. 'Mike' Bowe

Dr. James J. ‘Mike’ Bowe, 86, of Due West, husband of Ann Fowler Bowe, died Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Magnolia Manor in Greenwood, SC. He was born in Bluefield, WV to the late Herman J. and Hilda M. Pyle Bowe.

Dr. Bowe received his early education from Dupont High School before furthering his studies at the University of Florida, where he earned his undergraduate degree, and then the University of South Carolina where he earned his master’s degree. His academic journey culminated with a PhD from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Bowe devoted his professional career to nurturing minds as a mathematics professor at Erskine College. Throughout his tenure at Erskine, his contributions to the academic community were marked by his desire to cultivate a love for learning and critical thinking among his pupils.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Bowe served as a missionary to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and loved to travel. He was a prolific musician whose talents ranged from participating in Big Band and Orchestra performances to engaging in flute duets, jazz and more. Music was an integral part of his life, allowing him to express himself creatively and connect with others in profound ways. Dr. Bowe was an avid enthusiast of basketball, racquetball and hiking. He was a devoted member of the Honea Path Presbyterian Church and leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, inspiration and music.

Dr. Bowe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann; daughter, Laura Michelle Bowe of Springfield, MO; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Tiffany Bowe of Herndon, VA and four grandchildren.

A celebration of Dr. Bowe’s life will be 10:30AM, Friday, July 11, 2025, at Honea Path Presbyterian Church with Rev. Amanda Taylor officiating.
