Doris Janette New, 75, resident of Woodview Apts., formerly of New Rd, Abbeville, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at the McCormick Nursing Home. She was born in Abbeville on June 23, 1943, the daughter of the late Albert Henry New and Irene Belle Finley New.
Doris was a graduate of Abbeville High School, Class of 1961. She was employed in textiles, food services and later as a sitter and caretaker. Doris enjoyed gospel quartets and country music. An enthusiastic supporter of the Abbeville Panthers, she was one of their biggest fans, attending games at every opportunity. Doris cared for animals, wild or tame. She was especially fond of rescuing deer. Her dog, Missy, was her most cherished companion. Doris was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and most recently worshipped at Main Street United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Allen New, Harold Dean New and Sanford Ellis New; her nephew, Rusty New, niece, Julie New and sister-in-law, Peggy New.
Doris was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Susie New and Julia Petty; her close friends, Mike and Mary Hendricks; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside memorial service to celebrate Doris’s life will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday, June 30, 2019 in the Veteran’s Section of Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 2699 Hwy. 72 W., Abbeville, SC 29620.
