L. Bill Botts, Jr., age 75, of Abbeville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Born on April 3, 1951, in Greenwood, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Jewel Grace Loftis and Lt. Col. Billy Botts, USA (Ret.).
A proud graduate of Calhoun Falls High School, Class of 1969, Bill continued his education at Anderson College before earning his degree from Piedmont Technical College. He devoted many years to his career at Flexible Technologies, where he worked until his retirement in 2019. Bill's commitment and contributions were deeply appreciated by colleagues and friends alike. He will be remembered for his steadfast dedication and the positive impact he made throughout his life.
A member of Smyrna Methodist Church, Bill enjoyed supporting the Abbeville Panthers football team. Known affectionately as “Willie Bird” to family and friends, he found great joy in spending time with loved ones, sharing laughter on the golf course, and relaxing at the Shack. Bill also enjoyed painting and was recognized for his natural problem-solving abilities, honest and straightforward communication, and quiet wisdom.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dennis Wayne Botts, Sr.
Bill was a devoted father to his daughters Mary Ann Botts Nickles (Tom), Alice Botts Polatty (Danny), and Amy Botts Dodgen (Justin), leaving them with treasured memories. He held deep respect and affection for his sons-in-law and was a cherished grandfather to Ashlann, Madde, Thomas, Cameron N., Zach, Olivia, Cameron S., and Nicholas, as well as a great-grandfather to Skyla and Emery. He is also survived by his younger brother, Michael Botts, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.
During the past several years, since 2023, Bill was lovingly cared for by his beloved daughters and Susan “Noonie” Major Botts-Petty, mother of his children, along with her husband, Jim. Their dedicated support was a source of comfort throughout his journey.
A service to honor Bill’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Harris Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Tony Temple officiating. Family and friends are invited to greet one another immediately following the service.
