Allen Jay Gaer, 81, of the Savannah Lakes Community in McCormick, SC, husband of Susan Blanchard Gaer, died Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the Hospice House in Greenwood, SC. He was born in Harlan, Iowa to the late Lawrence and Mabel Roberts Gaer.
Allen retired as Captain of the Los Angeles City Fire Department after serving for 28 years with unwavering commitment. His career exemplified not only his bravery but also his deep commitment to the safety and well-being of others.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Allen was a proud member of the Rod and Gun Club of Savannah Lakes and enjoyed playing golf, where he often shared laughter and camaraderie with friends. He was an active member of the McCormick Methodist Church, contributing his time and talents as a member of the church choir and the Safety Committee.
Allen’s life’s journey was marked by dedication, service and an unwavering commitment to those around him. He was a respected leader and mentor to many and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Gaer.
Allen is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan; son, Brian Gaer (Rae) of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren, Carson Gaer, Kristen Gaer and Kaitlyn Gaer Campbell (Kelley); and many extended family and friends.
A service to celebrate Allen’s life will be 11:00AM, Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the McCormick Methodist Church with Pastor Jake Weber officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorial contributions, in memory of Allen, may be sent to the Humane Society of McCormick County, PO Box 900, McCormick, SC 29835.
